About the Event

11:00am: Speaker Dave Loucks, Opportune, will be presenting 'SMOG – It’s about the Reserves.' In this session Dave will discuss why the SMOG footnote is the most important footnote and that it is all about the Reserve data. You will gain the knowledge to communicate better with your reserve engineers, understand the Reserve Report components, and understand the components of the SMOG calculation. 

11:45am: Lunch Buffet Open

12:00pm: Speakers Randy Emmons and Carly Pelle, BDO, will be presenting 'Oil & Gas and the R&D Tax Credit.'  This session will provide a general overview of the R&D tax credit, and highlight opportunities specific to the oil and gas industry. The presentation will also provide an update on how tax reform affects the utilization of R&D tax credits, and how these changes have presented new opportunities for taxpayers to claim this credit.


Dave Loucks, Director, Opportune

Dave has over 29 years of business experience in public accounting and private industry.  Dave’s public accounting career was at the Denver offices of KPMG, BDO Seidman, Deloitte, and Hein & Associates, concentrating on exploration & production companies.  From 1998 to 2000, he was the CFO of an INC. 500 international software company. In 2007, he left to public accounting to develop and market the Assent brand of specialty accounting solutions for the oil & gas industry, which was acquired by Opportune in 2009.   Assent now includes solutions for ARO and Leases along with the standardized measure of oil & gas calculations. 

Dave is an instructor with PDI teaching classes on financial reporting, ARO, SMOG and reserves. Dave graduated from the University of Denver earning a BS in Accounting.  He is a CPA in Colorado and a member of the AICPA and COCPA.


Randy Emmons, Research & Development Senior Manager, BDO

Randy is a Senior Manager with BDO’s R&D Tax Services Practice for the Central U.S. Region and is located in the Grand Rapids, Michigan office. For fifteen years Randy has worked full time in the area of U.S. federal and state R&D tax services. Randy has designed and implemented procedures for small, privately-held and multi-billion dollar companies to identify and document R&D costs and activities, as well as assisted in supporting 90% of credits claimed on IRS and/or state taxing authority examinations. Randy’s experience includes servicing companies in a wide range of industries including aerospace, automotive, food & beverage, manufacturing, oil and gas, and software. 

Carly Pelle, Research & Development Associate, BDO

Carly is an Associate with BDO’s Specialized Tax Services for the Southwest U.S. Region and is located in the Dallas, Texas office. Since joining BDO last year, Carly has assisted in helping both large and small companies in the oil and gas industry identify and document their R&D tax credits. In addition to this industry, Carly’s experience also includes servicing clients in the biotechnology, engineering, manufacturing, and software industries.
